German Shepherds are the dog of choice for inexperienced dog handlers that want a "guard dog". They are naturally leery of strangers and have a very intimidating bark.
One word of caution though.... a "guard dog" is virtually useless at STOPPING an attacker. Dogs are good deterrents, but probably less than half a percent of dogs in North America are mentally and physically capable of confronting an Adult attacker for any reason other than self-preservation.... that is, back a dog into a corner, and it'll bite but the average dog out there will tuck tail and run if they have the option. Thankfully for those of us with dogs, most criminals don't know this. ;)

What type of dog would you all recommend, that would do this, but also be a good dog to take to the park and stuff like that? | I don't think she wants a "guard dog." Just a dog with an intimidating bark will do. Most dogs LOVE people and wouldn't do anything if a stranger came into the house.
Also, check with your house insurance company before getting a dog. My mom's insurance wouldn't allow german shepards, chows, pits, etc.

I have had GSDs for 25+ years and I know mine would stop an intruder, over the years only two people have been stupid enough to enter the house uninvited, 1 got as far as the porch, the other got as far as putting his arm through an open window to try and open a larger one. They will let people in I invite, I have always had a mix of West German Show lines and European working lines,
