Growing up we had a Shitzu, they are great dogs. They tend to get a little bit lazy as they get older but thats probably more so a result of being overly spoiled and not worked out enough.
Laso apsos are wild! very hyper dogs in my experience but extremely playful.
I'm more a fan of small dogs.

Saaavage,
Mastiffs are gentle giants. Have you had large dogs before, they play rough due to their size so if you have kids make sure the kids know not to let the dog push them around because the dog does not know any better and is just playing. A mastiff is a great family dog and probably one of the lazier big dogs, expect a female to be more protective of the family, expect a non-fixed male to be the hardest to train. They have shorter lives than a lot of dogs so don't expect them to live for fifteen years. My family used to raise Rott's when I was a kid, they were incedibly fun and nice dogs but you have to be real careful of breaders these days as people have been breeding the mean ones so the bread has gotten a bad rap. Once again with small kids watch out, the Rott's are strong dogs and play time can be rough, they are great family dogs but require a strong discipline. Personally I have two greyhounds these days, they are incredible dogs you might look into them. I know they don't have that tough image but my older hound has whipped almost every species at the dog park including two pits at once. The only dogs he would never pick a fight with were mastiffs and rotts.

ya i don't know about pit bulls, i think it depends a lot on how they are brought up and trained. i think they can be both a great pet, and dangerous.

Don't do it man. I work at the hummane society and almost every pit bull that comes in we have to put down because they are soooo agressive. Just get a lab or a golden retriever.

Pittballs are great dogs. But if you don't have a good reason to want one, you should be VERY careful. I think for EXPERIENCED pet owners who intend to compete in weight pulls or agility, and know what to look for in a breeder, getting a pitbull can be great thing. But if you're not going to be an EXCEPTIONAL pet owner who really does their research, stay away from pitbulls. They don't deserve the reputation they have. Pitbulls are not good for homes that are inexpereinced with pets.
Mastiffs are gentle giants, and very easy to live with. But they do have their share of health problems and can be a little bit expensive to keep.
