Available InEye drops, tablets Why PrescribedTo treat urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, or eye infections caused by bacteria. How It WorksNorfloxacin inhibits the activity of a bacterial enzyme (gyrase) that is necessary for proper DNA formation and replication. This prevents bacteria cells from reproducing. Range and FrequencyFor urinary tract infections: Adults: 400 mg, 2 times a day, for 3 to 21 days. For sexually transmitted diseases: 800 mg in a single one-time dose. For eye infections: 1 drop in each affected eye, 4 times a day, for 7 days. Onset of EffectVaries depending on the infection being treated. Duration of ActionUnknown. Dietary AdviceTablets should be taken on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of fluids, especially citrus juices or cranberry juice, but avoid milk and dairy derivatives. StorageStore in a tightly sealed container away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Missed DoseTake it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule. Do not double the next dose. Stopping the DrugIt is very important to take this drug as prescribed for the full treatment period, even if you begin to feel better before the scheduled end of therapy. Prolonged UseIf your symptoms do not improve or instead become worse after a few days, consult your doctor promptly. Over 60No special problems are expected. Driving and Hazardous WorkDo not drive or engage in hazardous work until you determine how the medicine affects you. AlcoholIt is advisable to abstain from alcohol when fighting an infection. PregnancyIn some animal tests, norfloxacin has caused birth defects. Adequate studies in humans have not been done. It should be used during pregnancy only if potential benefits clearly justify the risks. Before you take norfloxacin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Breast FeedingNorfloxacin passes into breast milk and may cause serious side effects in the nursing infant; use of the drug is discouraged when nursing. Infants and ChildrenOral forms of fluoroquino-lones such as norfloxacin should not be used by persons under the age of 18. Norfloxacin eye drops should not be used by children under 1 year old. Special ConcernsIf norfloxacin makes your skin or eyes more sensitive to sunlight, wear sunglasses and protective clothing, use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher, and avoid excessive exposure to the sun. Overdose SymptomsNausea, headache, dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, seizures. What to DoCall your doctor, emergency medical services (EMS), or the nearest poison control center immediately. Drug InteractionsConsult your doctor for specific advice if you are taking aminophylline, antacids, cancer drugs, cyclosporine, didanosine, iron supplements, sucralfate, theophylline, or zinc salts. Food InteractionsThe effects of caffeine may be magnified by this drug. Milk and dairy products can reduce blood levels of norfloxacin by as much as half. Disease InteractionsCaution is advised when taking norfloxacin. Consult your doctor if you have a disorder of the central nervous system or any other medical condition. Use of norfloxacin may cause complications in patients with kidney disease, since this organ works to remove the medication from the body. Serious Side EffectsSerious reactions to norfloxacin are rare and include seizures, mental confusion, hallucinations, agitation, nightmares, depression, shortness of breath, unusual swelling in the face or extremities, and loss of consciousness. Also skin burning, redness, blisters, rash, or itching on exposure to sunlight. Call your doctor immediately. Common Side EffectsIncreased sensitivity to sunlight (and increased risk of sunburn) for days following therapy. Less Common Side EffectsDiarrhea, nausea and vomiting, stomach pain and upset, gas, headache, dizziness, restlessness, insomnia, changes in taste perception, drowsiness, itching, dry mouth, unusual body aches or pains.
