Available InCapsules, tablets Why PrescribedTo treat high blood pressure (hypertension); to treat conditions that cause edema (swelling of body tissues resulting from excess salt and water retention). How It WorksThis drug combines a thiazide diuretic (hydrochloro-thiazide) and a potassium- sparing diuretic (triamter-ene). Diuretics increase the excretion of salt and water in the urine. By reducing the overall fluid volume in the body, these drugs reduce blood volume and so reduce pressure within the blood vessels. Range and FrequencyAdults: 1 or 2 capsules or tablets once a day. Children: The dose must be determined by your doctor. Onset of EffectWithin 2 hours. Duration of Action6 to 12 hours. Dietary AdviceHydrochlorothiazide should be taken in the morning after breakfast. StorageStore in a tightly sealed container away from heat and direct light. Missed DoseTake it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule. Do not double the next dose. Stopping the DrugThe decision to stop taking the drug should be made by your doctor. Prolonged UseSee your doctor regularly for examinations and tests if you must take this medicine for an extended period. Over 60Adverse reactions may be more likely and more severe. The dose must be determined by a pediatrician. Special ConcernsTo prevent hydrochlorothiazide from interfering with sleep, take it in the morning. If you are taking it for high blood pressure, follow the diet and weight control measures recommended by your doctor. Avoid exposure to sunlight, use a sunblock, or wear protective clothing. This medicine may cause your body to lose potassium. Follow your doctor's instructions about eating potassium-rich foods or taking a potassium supplement. Overdose SymptomsDehydration, muscle weakness, cramps, heart arrhythmias. What to DoCall your doctor, emergency medical services (EMS), or the nearest poison control center immediately. Drug InteractionsConsult your doctor for specific advice if you are taking ACE inhibitors, cyclosporine, medications or dietary supplements that contain potassium, cholestyramine, colestipol, digitalis drugs, lithium, or any over-the-counter medication. Food InteractionsAvoid consuming large servings of high- potassium foods, which include bananas, citrus fruits and juices, melons, prunes, (and most fruits in general), avocados, potatoes, nuts, baked beans, brussels sprouts, and skim milk. Disease InteractionsCaution is advised when taking this medicine. Consult your doctor if you have diabetes, gout, kidney stones, lupus erythematosus, pancreatitis, heart disease, blood vessel disease, menstrual problems, liver disease, or kidney disease. Serious Side EffectsSkin rash, hives, intense itching, swelling of the mouth and throat, breathing difficulty, heart rhythm irregularities or palpitations, lightheadedness or dizziness, unusual bleeding or bruising. Call your doctor immediately. Common Side EffectsFluid depletion may lead to dizziness, especially upon arising from a sitting or lying position, as well as thirst, dry mouth, and constipation.
